We plan to conduct a linguistic analysis of the first book in The Song of Ice and Fire, Game of Thrones, to identify correlations between the characters’ speech patterns and the circumstances of their lives. We will consider variables such as sentence structure, word order, diction, social class, gender, region, etc., and how they relate to each other. This project is motivated by the immense popularity of Martin’s works in contemporary culture: since Game of Thrones is so popular, it is important to consider what biases and unstated assumptions underlay Martin’s narrative. If we have time, we will apply our analytic techniques to the narration of the text as well, examining how Martin’s writing style varies according to whose perspective he is representing.
